The ever useful drawstring bag

Having two babes in diapers means that leaving the house takes a bit of preparation. Well, more than a bit! In my effort to keep things quick I've managed to create a solution that works for me.

We always have a "Jack bag" and a "Maggie bag" ready to go. A couple diapers and wipes. An extra outfit for Jack, bandaids for Maggie. This works perfectly, especially if I'm taking one kid one place and my husband is taking another kid a different place. No need to worry about diaper bags, they each have their own! They are small enough they tuck right into my handbag with no trouble. Such a time & mind saver!

Just a simple drawstring bag. There are tutorials all over for them. The fabric I bought at Ikea a couple years ago. I used printable fabric to print their names and sew it on the bag. I've had a roll of printable fabric for a few years and it comes in handy for all sorts of projects. 

UPDATE: This is a very good tutorial from Purl Bee for an easy drawstring bag. Mine is similar except I didn't make boxy corners on the bottom.

Inspiration

While my machine is still, I'm creating longer lists of projects I'd love to complete.

My kids have had a large pile of silk play silks (cheap from Dharma Trading Co.) for a few years. I've always wanted to dye them.

Tao of Craft has a great tutorial for how to dye them with Kool-Aid.

Meanwhile, Piccoli Piselli has been tempting me to buy an Ottobre pattern book.

This is her version of the Sparrow jacket. She also pointed me to Needles and Haystacks who has a blog full of projects sewn from Ottobre patters.

Male Pattern Boldness has a sew along for a men's button up shirt starting February 1st. If you've been wanting to sew for a man, now's your chance!

Of course I have all sorts of good intentions to get a few tutorials up here. I've been asked for the tutorial for this ruffle skirt. It's really easy so I hope I get a chance to share it with you. I'm also hoping to share how to make pants with a zipper. Your children will only wear those elastic waist pants you make for so long...

I'm back!! What a fabulous blog vacation I've had. It has been wonderful to fully focus on my family and the holidays! We had a nice, relaxing vacation at my parents' home for Christmas. If you're looking for a great vacation spot, I highly recommend their house. They'll get up early with the kids, hold your baby when you need a break, even babysit so you can get a night out. Lovely.

I have a little tradition of sewing my husband's Christmas present. It started 2 years ago when I sewed him a tie. He calls it his "Christmas Tie" because he'll only wear it on Christmas. Admittedly, the fabric is a bit feminine. Last year I made him pajama pants. They are still too long and after a whole year you'd think I could get around to hemming them more. He doesn't seem to mind and wears them all the time.

This year I made him a shirt to match his new little boy.

Of course, they coordinated with all the girls' outfits (see here). I attempted some better photos of the outfit I entered into the Project Toddler Runway contest.

And this is the Somerset Hoodie I made. I added a bit of detail because I thought it was a bit too much plain red.
