Are you living your life passionately? Or do you feel like you just go through the motions? For this series, guest bloggers will be sharing their passions with us. I hope you are inspired to begin living your life with passion.
I was diagnosed with cancer before my second birthday. Our family doctor caught the tumor very early, and I received a clean bill of health five years later. I was grateful for life, but the experience turned an exceptionally outgoing toddler into a painfully shy child. I found it difficult to transform from a critically ill child into a healthy one - especially the often confusing health of a former cancer patient.
I loved the idea of being a mother - so much so that, at age four, I proclaimed that I would have "at least fifty" children. When I asked doctors about the long-term effects of my experimental chemo treatment, they explained they didn't know. Maybe I could have children, maybe I couldn't.
And so, when my daughter Emma showed up, I fully understood the gift of having a child. She wasn't what people call an "easy" baby - she had day and night fully swapped over when she was born, and she rarely slept more than twenty minutes at a time for her first three months of life. It didn't matter; she was ours, healthy, and wonderfully opinionated and expressive.
Johnny and Lily followed soon after, and I now have the luxury of staying home with our three amazing children. Sometimes people tell me "it's a shame" that I'm not using my Ph.D. in Medicine. I use my Ph.D. every day. I use the lessons it taught me in patience, creativity, and persistence. I know how to research a problem, and I understand that sometimes the best solutions take time.
Being home with my children is my career, and while it may not pay financially, it offers so many rich rewards. Nothing compares to freedom of being there every day of my children's lives. It's wonderful to know that, when my children are sick, I can focus on taking care of them without worrying about a leave of absence from work.
Cancer stole a piece of my childhood. Through parenting I experience childhood in all its health and beauty - with the added appreciation of adult perspective and an amazing husband to share it with. I am passionate about parenting - one of the greatest gifts I have ever received.
MaryAnne blogs at Mama Smiles. You'll find her setting goals, playing outside and getting creative with her kids. She
is an incredible inspiration for parenting with purpose.

I have a few a few pizza crust recipes I use. This is my favorite thick crust recipe. Super easy, very tasty.
Make the crust:
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1 Tablespoon active dry yeast
1 cup warm water
1 Tablespoon olive oil
Combine the first 4 dry ingredients. Combine water and oil, then add to the dry ingredients. I use my Kitchen Aid mixer to mix then use the dough hook to knead for about 5 minutes. You can mix by hand then knead on a lightly floured surface until the dough is smooth and elastic.
Grease a bowl and put ball of dough in it. Toss it around to coat. Cover the bowl and let rise 20 minutes. I use the same mixer bowl so I don't dirty another dish. In a rush, I sometimes skip this rise. The dough will still be good, just not as thick.
Grease a 12" or 16" pizza pan and spread dough out with your hands on the pan. Don't use a rolling pin. Top pizza and let rise for 15 more minutes. I've also skipped this rise with success.
Topping your pizza: Mix 2-3 Tablespoons of olive oil with 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning, 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, and a dash of salt. Spread oil mixture on crust, especially the edges. Add pizza sauce. Good pizza sauce is a requirement. If you aren't up for making your own, I recommend Trader Joe's pizza sauce. Then add 3/4 to 1 cup of shredded mozzarella and 1/4 cup fresh shredded parmesan.
Bake at 450 degrees for 11-15 minutes.
Do you make your own pizza?
I may, just possibly, be linking to one of these other blogs this week. Go check them out.

A lunch box is something that was on my "to sew" list this month that just didn't get checked off. Just in case you still have time, here is a list of lunch box tutorials that should inspire you to whip up a little something homemade for your school kids. Of course, when making a lunch bag or snack bags for your kids, be mindful that these are for food. Stay away from fabrics that are not safe for food.
Zippered top lunch bag by Blissful: I actually made a couple of these last year and really liked them.
Washable lunch bag by the Mad Quilter
Lunch bag by The Long Thread: I love this one!
Panelled Insulated Lunch Bag by Savvy Seams
Lunch Bag from Bend The Rules With Fabric via The Storque
Lunch Sack by A Lemon Squeezy Home: This is a great classic lunch sack
Cute Enough To Eat Lunch Bag by JoAnn's: I actually enlarged this pattern for the last lunch bag I made.
Then make yourself an ice pack, a cute ice pack cover, a few napkins, maybe a sandwich wrap, a sandwich wrap & mat, or snack bag and you're good! But please (PLEASE) don't use oil cloth, PUL or other fabrics that aren't supposed to be against your child's food. I say, who cares if it doesn't wipe clean, just wash it!
Have you made a lunch bag or box? Did you create your own pattern or use one you found?

My middle daughter has a hooded dress she absolutely loves. And by loves, I mean she'd wear it every day if I let her. So when I was trying to decide what to do for her birthday shirt I knew I had to add a hood. I was planning to make the shirt from scratch but considering her birthday is next month and I've got a few things to do before then, (read: move across country alone with 3 kids, enroll oldest in school, unpack, enjoy the 8th 9th month of pregnancy, etc.) I decided to use an existing shirt.
I'll add the pattern for the hood soon, when I find it... It is super easy to make. I'll definitely be adding some to any new Go To Dresses I make.
I lined this one, which I'm not sure I would do next time using heavy knit fabric. It made the hood a bit too heavy for the shirt, but it still works just fine.
The problem I have, is what do I applique/paint on the front for her 4th birthday? I thought I'd do something a bit more fun than just the number 4. I was thinking a tree with 4 apples and the number, but I'm not sold on that. So, what would you put on this shirt?
(By the way, this isn't her modeling it. She hasn't seen it.)
So, what would you put on the front??
UPDATE: You've asked what she likes! Well, she's pretty easy. Obviously it's a blue shirt, blue is her favorite color. She's not super girly, she leaves that to her older sister. She loves animals, ice cream, cake, parties, presents, friends, soccer, swimming, her sisters, dogs, swinging, slides, dirt, more dirt, sand, mud... you get the idea =)

Meet Larri from Seams Inspired. She claims she isn't Supermom, but I'm sure she's no slouch either! She's a homeschooling, public schooling, sewing, quilting, loving mom of 3. Her blog is always a pleasure to read. She writes not only about her sewing creations but her faith and a bit about her family.
Today Larri has the perfect Back to School project for us! Her Ice Pack Cover w/ Pocket for Love Notes is such a fun way to keep kids' lunches cool and put a smile on their faces! I can imagine any child would love to open their lunch box to find a special note from mom.
Here's all you'll need for a 5 1/2" x 4" icepack:
2 pieces of main fabric: 6 1/2" x 5"
2 pieces of fusible fleece: 6 1/2" x 5"
1 piece of contrasting fabric: 3 1/2" x 5"
Bias Trim: 11"
Hook & Loop tape (velcro): about an inch
Now hop on over to Seams Inspired for the full tutorial! Your kids will thank you!

Are you ready to make one of these?
I really LOVE how mine turned out. Just as cute as I thought it would be! But WOW I had a hard time getting a good picture of my completed dress. The first day I tried to capture it, my lens kept fogging up from the humidity. The next day I just didn't try hard enough I guess. But take my word for it. It's cute.
Let's get started! Make sure you've got these things before we start;
New to sewing? You might want to take a look at my intro to sewing course I did last year.
Let's get started!! Jump on over here for the Day 1 instructions!
If you are sewing along, feel free to post some pictures in the Flickr group! Both progress pictures and completed pictures are welcome.

Here are a few of my favorite links from last week:
Allie B Dallie made this super cute applique shirt. I love how it is off center and creative.
Wishes Dreams Love has the best solution ever to sleeves while playing sports. I needed this when I was younger!
Seamingly Smitten made herself this frock. Well done!
The Paisley Cupcake made this cape. I love that she says she waisted her time making it reversible!

Do you ever have weeks or months in life that are just less busy and relaxing? I'm coming off a bit of that now and have been thrown back into the "crazy." As I type this I'm procrastinating. Here's what's on my plate:
And you know what? Tomorrow will worry about itself.
Don't forget, next week is the Daphne Dress Sew Along. If you don't have your kit yet, don't worry. The posts will be there forever for you to do at your own speed!! If you have any questions or concerns about your kit, please feel free to email me or leave a comment.

Next month I've officially coined Sewing For Baby month. I hope you'll drop by for some inspiration. I've got pattern reviews (and sales!) and projects I've made, tutorials and guest bloggers. I'm wondering if I'll have time to make anything from this book
, which I've been eying. And if you've been wanting an easy sew along that would work for a boy or a girl? Well, look no further! Let me introduce the
Look for this in September. It's the Little Cap by Leila & Ben (there will be a discount). The pattern is sized for 6 mo to 5T. I'll be giving you some hints and tips to size it for your baby. Hopefully we can all come up with some cute boy or girl versions. This cap takes about an hour to make and is perfect for beginners. It is also perfect for using up scraps.
Looking for a sew along for boys right now? From an Igloo is doing a Sew-A-Long for Lil Blue Boo's hoodie at the end of the month. Go check it out!
***I have a great line up of guest bloggers in the next few months. If you'd like to do a guest blog or giveaway a product, please let me know.***

I recently bought a copy of Sewing Clothes Kids Love. When I opened the book I was overwhelmed by great color and design. I'm pretty sure the title is spot on as well.
These are my first projects.
The Dortje pants & the Brooklyn tank.
Clearly the pants are long. I washed them and they shrunk up just enough that now they fit perfectly.
I followed the instructions pretty closely and the fit works well. I did eliminate the side seem allowances on the pants to accommodate my thin girl. The only thing I would do differently next time is make the tank longer. I added the ruffle on it because it was short. As a size 110-116 I assumed it would fit my 106 cm little girl. Guess not. The tank is great, just needs a bit of length. I'll definitely be making more. I really love the pants. They are a bit labor intensive when you add so many details but I think it is worth it in the end.
The book really encourages you to embellish and use ruffles, gathers, ribbons and appliques. These pants don't look much like any of the examples in the book, which is part of the beauty of the book. So many possibilities in each garment.
I give the book two thumbs up. I especially love that the patterns go up to a size 11/12 and includes some unisex patterns. So, if you love sewing kid's clothes, grab yourself a copy of Sewing Clothes Kids Love.
